What is GP Training

Hooi

General Practice training is 3 years (full time) of postgraduate vocational training. It is delivered by regional training providers across Australia. A doctor training in General Practice is called a GP registrar.

Training components are:

Compulsory

  • Hospital based training (1 year)
  • GP based training (basic, advanced and subsequent , minimum of 18 months)
  • Augustine

Optional

  • special skills training
  • Elective training.

Training occurs in various settings, hospital and community. Urban and rural.

All doctors training for GP in Australia Must complete a minimum of 6 months of their GP based training in a rural setting and a minimum of 6 months GP based training in an outer metropolitan area.

If you are a GP registrar with the Institute of GP education. You are required to complete ALL components of your training (except your 6month rural GP term) in our region.

Up to 2 years leave (excluding parental leave) is available to GP registrars.
