Recognition of Prior Learning/Retrospective Credit

Group work

Recognition of prior learning recognises the fact that GP registrars may have had previous experiences in hospital and/or special skills training that is relevant to General Practice.

In applying for approval of prior learning the GP registrar believes that they have undertaken sufficient hospital and/or special skills training, that has equipped them with appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes for General Practice. Furthermore they believe that they have achieved these to such a level, that additional training time in hospital or special skill posts would not be beneficial to them.

The fundamental principle in the approval of prior learning, is that the GPR demonstrates to the assessors that they have achieved Knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate for General Practice to a sufficient level, that further hospital training would not beneficial.

The approval process involves the completion of an application form; the details of this are outlined on the AGPT website.

There are two types of prior learning that GPR can have recognised.

  1. Recognition of prior learning (RPL)- with a reduction in training time.
  2. Retrospective credit (RC) , with no reduction in training time.
