Outer Metro Term

Prostate models

In recognition of the growing health care needs of people living in outer metropolitan areas, the “More Doctors for Outer Metropolitan Areas Measure” was announced as part of the 2002-03 Budget. Under this scheme, doctors commencing the General Training Pathway of the Australian General Practice Training Program in 2003 or later are required to undertake a placement in a designated outer metropolitan area.

The Outer Metropolitan Term is not an additional term, just the location of one of your GP Terms. You can complete your Outer Metro term during your Basic, Advanced, Subsequent or Mandatory Elective time (if you are required to do Mandatory Elective).

The determination of whether an area is classed as Outer Metropolitan is done by the Department of Health and Aging.

There is financial support for registrars doing their outer metropolitan term. You are required to complete a claim for to receive this funding.
