Assessment during training

At IGPE we believe that ongoing assessment during training is imperative, assessment during training is the assessment of a GP registrar's performance as they progress through their training which has both formative purposes (provision of feedback) and summative purposes (providing evidence of progressive achievement of learning objectives).
See Assessment During Training Information Sheet for further information
Formative Assessment provides information on performance for the guidance and benefit of the GPR, to let them know how they progressing and to suggest further learning opportunities. It is an important part of the teaching and learning process because it involves feedback to GPR to help them improve their performance.
Summative assessment is intended to measure whether a particular level of competence or performance has been achieved at a particular point in time.
IGPE utilises various methods of formative and summative assessment throughout training.
Further information is available in the Assessment During Training information sheet.
Clinical Teaching Visits
Clinical teaching visits are an important component of your general practice training. During your basic, advanced and subsequent GP training terms you will be visited by an experienced clinical teacher (this may be a member of the IGPE educational team or a GP supervisor) who will observe your consultations. They will usually ‘sit-in' with you for one session.
This provides GP registrars with a unique opportunity to receive immediate feedback on their performance and to discuss ways of improving their skills as a General Practitioner.
Most GP registrars comment that these visits, although initially daunting, are a very valuable learning experience.
During this visit your performance is assessed and discussed with you. You will also receive a written report of the visit from the clinical teaching visitor.
Training Portfolio
The training portfolio is a means of documenting your training and teaching during your General Practice Training time with the Institute of General Practice Education (IGPE). It is important that all registrars maintain a portfolio as this information contributes to your successful completion of the training requirements and educational objectives as documented in the RACGP curriculum statement. (ref RACGP training program curriculum 1999)
The training portfolio also enables registrars to reflect on their learning and teaching and help them determine their learning needs.
You will be required to present your portfolio each year at the training advisor visit.
Further information can be found in the IGPE Training Portfolio Document.
