  • We try our best to arrange a continuous attachment of registrars to our core practices

How do I get a GP Registrar?

Any practice/supervisor that wants to take GP Registrars must have either approval or accreditation from not only IGPE but also the RACGP. Any practice that wants a registrar needs to be listed with IGPE. There are different stages of training and hence different types of accreditation/approval.

Types of Accreditation/Approval

  • GP Supervisors/Practices that are Accredited with IGPE and the RACGP are able to take registrars during the Basic and Advanced terms. These terms involve a high amount of supervision, teaching and release from the practice to attend educational sessions at IGPE. Practices are reimbursed for this (to a specific amount). To become accredited, the practice must apply to IGPE, then the RACGP and a practice visit must then be conducted. The Accreditation process is long and complicated. (Please note, IGPE is NOT currently recruiting for supervisors to take Basic and Advanced registrars).
  • GP Supervisors/Practices that are Approved with IGPE and the RACGP are able to take registrars during the Mentor and Mandatory Elective terms. These terms do not require supervision or teaching, but do require the registrar to be released on full pay to attend educational sessions at IGPE. Mentor supervisors will also be invited to attend educational sessions. Approval with IGPE and the RACGP is not processed until a confirmed placement has been organized. When a registrar approaches a practice, they have all the appropriate documentation that is necessary to be completed by both the registrar and the supervisor. Approval is obtained by completing the appropriate paperwork and approval from the RACGP.

To become a Mentor Supervisor

  • Download and read Mentor Supervisor Information
  • If interested, complete the Interested in Being a Mentor form and return it to IGPE. If you have been informed by the Dept of Health and Aging that you are eligible for the Outer Metropolitan Scheme, please indicate this on the form. There are financial incentives available.
  • Your name will then be entered in our database and put on the list of practices wanting mentor registrars that is included in the Mentor Pack sent to registrars.
  • (Please note, registrars will be looking for terms in February/March for start in July, and in August/September for start in January. It may be that there is a year's lapse until you have a registrar working in your practice).
  • When a registrar contacts you, you will need to interview them to determine their suitability. Once the position is accepted, the terms will need to be negotiated.
  • You will then need to complete all appropriate paperwork and submit it to IGPE.
  • If you no longer have a position available, please contact IGPE and your name will be removed from the list sent to registrars, but your name will be kept in the database.
