Tips for Exams
To be eligible to sit the exam, you MUST:
- have completed eight (8) active units of training by close of exam enrolments (one (1) active unit = 3 mths of Full Time Equivalent training - 4 Hospital Units (or RPL but not RC), must include 2 Basic Units & 2 Advanced Units); AND
- have completed all educational and training requirements of the AGPTP with IGPE (eg. 2 TA Contacts for each year of training, attendance at all releases and workshops to date etc); AND
- have completed a certified Basic CPR course 12 months prior to the close of enrolments; AND
- be a current Financial Associate or Member of the RACGP (see below); AND
- have current medical registration
Becoming a Member of the RACGP
All candidates applying to sit the College Examination must be financial members of the College by the closing date to enroll in the College Examination. To become a member, applicants should initially contact the Customer Call Centre on Freecall 1800 331 626 and obtain a membership package. (Alternatively you can call your State Faculty Office , NSW/ACT (02) 9886 4700).
RACGP Membership fee as of 8th March 2005 $265 per year for a GP Registrar (pro-rata).
To sit the exam, you MUST:
- complete the Exam Form Request and submit it to IGPE (IGPE will then obtain your training report from GPET and send it to you via post , as you will need the original report signed by your Training Advisor)
- send to the RACGP:
- application form
- training report (as supplied by IGPE)
- basic CPR certificate

The enrolment fee is $2900 (GST free) and is payable to the RACGP upon applying for membership. Candidates who are experiencing financial hardship may apply to the RACGP for special consideration. Candidates who withdraw from the examination will incur a fee from the RACGP.
The RACGP examination has two components:-
- The Written Component:
- AKT (Applied Knowledge Test) 150 questions to be completed in four hours (please note that the AKT is a three hour exam but all candidates have been given four hours to complete)
- KFP (Key Feature Problems) 26 questions to be completed in three hours.
- The Clinical Component:
- This consists of approximately 17 stations, 14 active stations and three rest stations. It takes approximately four hours.
- IGPE holds ‘Exam Tips' half day releases (please see IGPE release dates), which is open to all registrars who have applied to sit the exam.
