Learning Plans
What is a Learning Plan?
A learning plan is a document that a GP registrar develops in consultation with their GP supervisor and / or their medical educator.
It describes.
- Identified learning needs
- The goals that the learner sets to meet these needs
- The activities that the learner plans to undertake to achieve the goals.
- The plan for review of achievement of learning goals.
Some questions to ask yourself when developing a learning plan include:
- What do I want to learn in this term and why?
- How will I learn it ?
- When will I review my learning objectives?
- What will I do if I am not achieving them?
- Who can I discuss my learning objectives with?
Identifying your personal learning needs and exploring ways to address these needs is an important component of adult learning. The development of a learning plan facilitates self-directed learning that is more tailored to your individual needs and enables the development of more personalised and meaningful educational experience.
At IGPE we recommend that a GP registrar develops at least one learning plan every 6 months during training and discusses it with their supervisor for that 6 month period (this includes hospital and special skills training as well as GP terms).
Learning plans form a component of your Training Portfolio.
