GPRA was established in 1974 and has always represented views on relevant issues of education and training providing support for registrars during their training.
It is a public company that represents more than 90% of GP registrars Australia wide and is supported by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.
Its patron is Professor John Murtagh.

The organisation consists of:

  1. Board of 8 directors elected by GPRA members
  2. Managing Director and the support team
  3. Advisory council which consists of : Registrar Liaison Officers (RLO) from all Regional Training Providers (RTP) and the National Registrar Representatives in other organisations.

The objectives of GPRA are:

  • Improving the health care of all Australians through excellence in education
  • Promoting the profession of General Practice
  • Support the needs of registrars and their families in their training
  • Demonstrating commitment towards excellence in General Practice and unity of the profession.

GPRA has several strong links with AMA, RACGP, GPET, AMSA, Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA), ACRRM, Regional Training Providers AND General Practice Supervisors' Association and therefore:

  • Negotiates national minimum terms and conditions
  • Publicly opposes negative changes and issues
  • Conducts research into what is best for registrars e.g. when to cross over from salary to percentage, indemnity, etc

Check the GPRA Website and join it. You will receive a regular newsletter and will directly benefit you. It is the unified voice for the future of General Practice.
