Bankstown Division of General Practice

The Bankstown GP Division Incorporated has 174 GP members and celebrated its 12th Anniversary in 2004. The Division's vision is to "lead and support primary care". Our Mission is to provide education and support to General Practice, which will sustain and improve it, enhance the care of its patients and improve the coordination and delivery of health outcomes in the Bankstown community. The Division offers at no cost to Registrars on the Institute of General Practice Education Program, Registrar Membership, which will allow you to have access to our comprehensive education and support programs. The Division ran 43 education events during 2004. Over 80 percent of GP members participated in at least one of these events which cover continuing professional development, program workshops and seminars to improve the practice as a business. The Division sees this high participation rate as an endorsement of Bankstown GP Divisions education program and that we are providing value to our GP members.

Fairfield Division of General Practice

Fairfield Division was established as one of the first ten Divisions in NSW in 1993 and is located in Fairfield CBD. The community served by the Division is the most ethically and linguistically diverse in Australia. Of the population of approximately 182,000 in Fairfield LGA, 54% were born overseas in non-English speaking countries. The percentage of the total population where parents were born overseas is 71.5%. The main country of birth (outside Australia) was Vietnam (14%) followed by Italy (3%) and China (2%). Most common languages spoken at home are English (29%), Vietnamese (15.4%), Chinese languages (10%) and Italian (4%).

The ethnicity of the community is to a significant extent reflected in the membership profile of the Division. Of the Division's total membership of 220 Australia as the country of graduation is 57% compared to the national average of 75%. Asia as the country of graduation is 19% compared to the national average of 8%. Membership of the Division is predominantly male - 71%, compared to the national average of 59%.

Liverpool Division of General Practice

The Liverpool Division of General Practice (LDGP) first started its operations in 1994. Our offices are located within Liverpool Hospital. The Division currently has a staff of seven and runs programs in nearly all of the National Health Priority Areas. LDGP has regular meetings with local stakeholders including Liverpool Hospital, Liverpool City Council, University Departments, Area Health Service, Consumer Groups, and Chamber of Commerce.

LDGP shares the Area Health Service with 6 other Divisions of General Practice they are: Fairfield, Bankstown, Macarthur, Southern Highlands, Canterbury, and Central Sydney.

The Division's geographical area of activity covers the whole of the Liverpool Local Government Area., a suburban locale within the Sydney metropolitan area that covers a region of 30.6 square kilometres. The boundaries of the area encompass 34 suburbs.

Division Programs Include:

  • Population Health Promotion & Prevention (Antenatal, Women's Health, Cervical Screening, Child Immunisation, Cancer Prevention, Community Education)
  • Population Health Chronic Disease Program (CVD, Diabetes, Mental Health, Teams of Two
  • Improving Access to Primary Care Service (Aged Care GP Panels, Mind Matters +GP)
  • Quality Use of Medicines (NPS, HMR)
  • General Practice Support (PIP, EPC, IT, Practice Nurses and Staff, Recall and reminder systems, accreditation, PKI & HIC Online, CME)

Macarthur Division of General Practice

Mission Statement - To assist local general practitioners in providing optimum care to health consumers in the Macarthur area.

The Division covers the LGAs of Campbelltown, Camden & Wollondilly (excluding Warragamba and Silverdale). The population as at the 2001 Census was 220,482. The Division has 175 GP Members.

The Division provides GPs with a range of support services. Broadly these services include:

  • Metabolic Management Program, combining Diabetes education & Healthy Eating, Activity Lifestyle programs.
  • Women's Health which includes: Antenatal Shared Care; Cervical Screening Service (to start early 2005); Domestic Violence; and Breastfeeding.
  • Population Health: Immunisation Program, Tobacco Control, Drug and Alcohol
  • Mental Health - The Division shares a GP Liaison Officer with Macarthur Health Service. Providing Teams of Two initiative, Better Outcomes in Mental Health Program and other shared care arrangements.
  • Aged Care - Aged Care Panels Program and the Division chairs the Aged Care Committee in Macarthur.
  • Better Practice Capacity Program: which includes practice accreditation, IT, business management.
  • GP After Hours Service - based at Campbelltown Hospital.
  • GP Education: Continuing Professional Development Program for Campbelltown & Camden.

St George Division of General Practice

The St George Division of General Practice aims to promote general practice and support General Practitioners in their own right and enhance their ability to provide quality primary healthcare to the Community. It also aims to promote and foster strong and productive alliances with local hospitals, health and community services, both public and private. In pursuit of thebest possible health comes. Divisions of General Practice were established in 1992 across Australia. These Divisions act as a support body to the General Practitioners. The services provided include:

  • Ongoing Medical Education
  • Practice Support
  • Accreditation Guidance
  • Resource development.

The Divisions are represented by a peak body The Australian Division of General Practice Ltd. (ADGP).

Sutherland Division of General Practice

Sutherland Division of General Practice aims to support general practice in the pursuit of quality primary health care for the community through training and education, information and resources, partnerships with key stakeholders and advocacy for its members. The Sutherland Division of General Practice's core business covers four main areas:

  • Improvement of the health of the population in the Sutherland Shire through general practice;
  • Services to GPs by the Division;
  • Promotion of general practice to the community and
  • Provision of a sound infrastructure.

The Division's programs have a strong focus on building organisational capacity to more effectively address the needs of general practitioners, clinical and non clinical staff working in general practice and consumers and to create long term partnerships across the local health and community sector.

The Division is a non-political organisation dedicated to the improvement of General Practice for GPs and their patients. Membership is free and entitles you to membership of various sub-committees.

Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is the voice of Australian general practice and the national leader in setting and maintaining the standards for quality practice, education and research in Australian general practice. The RACGP shares our experience with other professional organisations and is responsible for fostering unity between Australia's General Practice organisations and providing a unified voice in dealings with governments. The College actively enhances the place of general practitioners in our health care system and supports the enthusiastic and capable registrars who have chosen General Practice as a viable career choice. Through leadership and advocacy, the RACGP works to improve the standard of health care for all Australian and especially groups of people with special health care needs. The RACGP is committed to sharing our experience and working with other professional organisations to advance key concerns for general practitioners, our patients and society.

University of New South Wales

The UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine (SPHCM) is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate general practice education and primary care research. On campus Professor Mark Harris and senior lecturers, Dr Barbara Booth and Dr Suzanne McKenzie co-ordinate and deliver the undergraduate general practice curriculum. They provide support and training for GPs who teach medical students, many of whom also supervise registrars in their practice. They are also actively involved in general practice research and work closely with some of the University research centres: the Centre for General Practice Integration Studies and the Centre for Health Equity, Training, Research and Evaluation. The university staff can provide advice and support for GPs wishing to pursue research ideas.

Affiliated with the SPHCM is the General Practice Unit at Fairfield Hospital. The GP Unit is a department of the new Sydney South West Area Health Service. Professor Nicholas Zwar is the Director of the unit and is supported by two Staff Specialists - Dr Sanjyot Vagholkar and Dr Jeremy Bunker. The Unit is a training practice for GP registrars providing six month terms for basic and advanced registrars. Registrars usually combine part-time work at the unit with work in a nearby private practice in order to gain exposure to a broad spectrum of clinical care. The GP supervisors are actively involved in postgraduate and undergraduate medical education through their links with IGPE and other regional GP training providers, involvement with local Divisions of General Practice as well as their university association.
