Assessment During Training
Tools for the Toolbox
In December 2005, even though the year was rapidly drawing to a close a group of NSW medical educators were not yet ready to start the Christmas wind down, instead they travelled to Smithfield to participate in a Medical Educator's Retreat.
There was much discussion and many ideas shared. One such discussion focussed on assessment during training (ADT) or In-training assessment (ITA). It appeared that there were a variety of tools being utilised by the RTPs and the suggestion was made to have a common site where this information could be obtained and ideas could be shared.
I have compiled some of the tools that RTPs have found useful for the assessment of GP registrars during training.
I have made every endeavour to provide links to the original sources of the information so as not to mislead or plagiarise. If you wish to make any comments or suggestions or add to the toolkit there is a contact link below.
If you choose to utilise any of the tools or information below in your own training program, it would be appreciated if you could appropriately acknolwedge the original source of the material.

- Self-assessment checklists
This, as the name suggests is a self-assessment tool for GPR, it is distributed at the start of training. GP registrars are encouraged to complete the checklists and then to discuss the lists with their supervisors and medical educators. The aim is help them identify potential gaps in knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours. The plan is that they will use them several times throughout their training.

- Actor Sessions in workshops
IGPE utilise the actor sessions during basic workshops as an assessment during training activity. GPR are provided with their feedback verbally and in written form. In some sessions we have also formalised the process of peer feedback which has had varying degrees of success.

- Assessment form utilised in Clinical teaching visits and by GP supervisors at the completion of a GP term
IGPE use the clinical teaching visit as an opportunity for assessment of the GPR. In a recent survey of our GPR they felt that this was an ideal opportunity to undertake an assessment and valued the feedback provided in the assessment form. In addition we have modified the end-of- term assessment form so that the same tool is utilised. In this way the same tool is used by different assessors, which enhances the quality of the assessment during training process.
The assessment form has been developed utilising the competencies detailed in the RACGP examination assessment forms, this facilitates better integration of the assessment process during training with the RACGP fellowship examination.

- Assessment Activities
Over the last 12 months IGPE have implemented a program of assessment activities. These take the form of a 30 minute quiz which relates to the previous half-day release clinical topic or workshop. At present these have only been developed for basic GPR but will soon be continued into the advanced GP term. So far the feedback from GPR has been very positive and the medical educators find them a useful tool for checking what the GPR have learned from the session and whether they are achieving the learning outcomes for the session.
